What Music Aptitude Test Questions Look Like

What Music Aptitude Test Questions Look Like

The Music Aptitude Test can feel unfamiliar at first, especially if your child has never seen the format before. This page shows simple video examples of the main areas usually tested: pitch, rhythm, melody and texture.

If you want the full overview first, read our Complete Guide to the Music Aptitude Test (UK).

Important: these are short example-style demonstrations to help you understand the format. They are not a full test. The real challenge comes from accuracy, concentration and repeated listening under pressure.
Pitch

Pitch Questions

Pitch questions test whether a child can hear if one note is higher or lower than another, or spot a small change in sound.

This is often harder than parents expect because the difference between two notes can be very small.

What to listen for: focus on whether the second sound is higher, lower or changed in some way compared with the first.
Rhythm

Rhythm Questions

Rhythm questions test whether a child can recognise patterns of long and short sounds, pulses, or the order of a rhythmic pattern.

These questions reward careful listening rather than musical theory knowledge.

What to listen for: notice the pattern of the sounds, not just how fast they are played.
Melody

Melody Questions

Melody questions ask children to compare short musical phrases and decide whether they are the same or different.

The change can be very slight, so attention and memory both matter here.

What to listen for: try to hold the first melody in your mind, then compare it carefully with the second.
Texture

Texture Questions

Texture questions test whether a child can hear how many sounds or musical lines are happening at the same time.

This can mean identifying one sound, two sounds, or more complex layers.

What to listen for: ask whether you can hear one line only, or more than one sound happening together.
